RAINBOW BRIDGE REMEMBRANCE DAY

Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day on August 28th sets aside a day to remember the pet companions we’ve lost.

The death of a pet, whether furry, feathered, or an uncommon variety, is felt deeply. They become family and a familiar part of our lives. Mourning their death is different for everyone, and the observance provides a way to help heal the ache of loss.

The pain of loss is real. As each person travels through their grief, we remember the companionship and comfort they provided to us. Don’t forget that part of the relationship included care provided by you. The empty space left by the loss of a beloved pet is sometimes a difficult void to overcome.

Celebrate the home you provided and the joy your beloved pet brought you in return. When you are ready, you will know the time has arrived to find a new ‘critter’ to replace the emptiness felt. There are many animals yet to find a home. In time, you can be their new home.

This is Terri typing... I am in the hospital today, getting my knee replacement!! I wrote this last weekend to post today and I look forward to reading about your special pet(s).

Terri believes in the premise of the Rainbow Bridge. Rather than post five questions, she just wants the Meddlers to tell us about a special pet in your life who is no longer with you. Let's do this with love and hope rather than sadness and tears!!

Now onto the post about my sweet Lulu. She was the best kitty! She was my cuddle buddy...well when she wasn't attached to Trent. In the summer months on grocery day, it was always fun to see her go after the bag that had the strawberries in it. She loved to drink water out of the kitchen faucet. I have a short little video of some pics of her over the years. We have lost some pets over the years, but losing Lulu was the hardest one of all on all of us.

At the end, you may also tell us about your week so far! Its been a hard week, work wise. I am at the point that I am ready to be done. I had an interview last week, and should be hearing this week the outcome of it... hoping for good news. If not then I will continue my search for a new job.

NATIONAL RIDE THE WIND DAY

Enjoy the last days of summer and the warm summer breezes on August 23 as you celebrate the annual National Ride the Wind Day.

National Ride The Wind Day commemorates the anniversary of the first human-powered flight to win the Kremer prize.

It was on August 23rd of 1977 that the Gossamer Condor 2, flew the first figure-eight course specified by the Royal Aeronautical Society, at Minter Field in Shafter, California. Slowly cruising at only 11 mph, it traveled a distance of 2,172 meters.

• The Gossamer Condor 2 was built by Dr. Paul B MacCready and piloted by amateur cyclist and hang-glider pilot Bryan Allen.
• The Gossamer Condor 2 aircraft is preserved at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

We all know that cooler air is right around the corner so take advantage of these nice days and get outside as much as possible. Test out those human-powered aircraft and make some history. summer breezes allow us to fly human-powered. In the event you lack a human-powered aircraft, flying a kite is always a good back plan.

1. Tell us about the first airplane ride you took and do you like to fly? My first flight was when I was 18, I was going out to California with a cousin. I was flying alone from my city to Chicago to meet up with her. My flight got bummed up early, so it was a mad dash to the gate. I was sandwiched between 2 very large business men (who neither smelled all that great...sigh). Once in Chicago I was alone for a few hours before her flight arrived. While it was a great opportunity, I was scared beyond belief...so grateful for when I saw her... then began our great adventure.. flew to Colorado, picked up her truck and made our trek to Califorina, stopping along the way. (she was moving to Alaska where her husband just got stationed, and had been visiting with his family in New York before she met up with me in Chicago. We arrived in CA, for a fun filled 2 weeks with her mom, and lots of sight seeing.

I do love to fly, and now that the brother is in Florida, I try to fly down there once a year!

2. Have you ever gone hang gliding and was it on the beach with boat power, or from a mountain with only the wind and your body? I have never been.

3. Have you ever gone kite flying and with whom? I have, as a kid several times.... and then with my boys

4. Experimental aircraft is quite popular as a hobby where Terri lives. Have you or anyone you know ever constructed a flying machine and did you ride in it? No, but my hubs would love to do this.

5. Another big hobby around Lakeland is Radio Controlled Airplanes. Have you ever seen them flying or tried your hand at it? I have not, but the hubs has. He and his father had one (I think they still do) - Linda Lou - they have crashed it a few times, the last time put her into a major repair mode that had them frustrated, so it was put up...that has been years ago.

While this is not a RC plane, it was one that John had that he brought up to my apartment, that he my my oldest like to fly in the field. 1991...oh so many years ago

6. Please tell us something about your week. We are down to one vehicle right now as the hubs is in the shop. The first half of the week, I don't really need my truck with me working from home... but dang it all... now that I don't have it, I always seem to want to go somewhere... Hopefully his will be home today. If not, I will be taking him to work on Thursday, as I have an interview.

NATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE DAY

Observed annually on August 7, National Lighthouse Day honors the beacon of light that for hundreds of years symbolized safety and security for ships and boats at sea. At one time, the beacon of light could be found across almost all of America’s shorelines.

A lighthouse is described as a tower, building or any other type of structure that is designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses and used as an aid to navigation for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways.

Lighthouse Facts

• Mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, safe entries to harbors
• Assist in aerial navigation
• The number of lighthouses has declined due to the expense of maintenance. Modern electric navigational systems are replacing them. 
• Their light source is called a lamp (either electric or oil-fueled).
• Originally lit by an open fire and then candles.
• Differ depending on the location and purpose but have standard components
• The lantern room is a glassed-in housing at the top of a lighthouse tower
• Beneath the lantern room is the Watch Room or Service Room 
• Next to the Watch room is an open gallery.
• Development accelerated in the 17th century with Britain’s Trinity House constructing its first in 1609.

1. Let's start with a number! How many lighthouses have you visited? maybe a handful?

2. Have you been inside a lighthouse and did you walk to the top? I have been in a few. The last one a few years ago, and it was a disaster. I have never had a panic attack in my life... and we were half way up, it was a winding staircase and I started to get sweaty, and froze, I couldn't move. The panic got worse as I had no clue as to how my hubs was going to get me down. It was the worst feeling in the world. I have yet to go back up in one!

3. Do you seek them out when you are traveling the coastlines or are you not that big a fan? I don't seek them out.

4. Do you have a favorite scripture or another reference to share with us concerning a guiding light in your life? Psalm 119:105 - "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path."

5. If you don't collect lighthouses when you travel, is there something tangible that you tend to collect as a souvenir when you are on vacation or a road trip? on vacation, I will pick up some little knick knack to remember the area we are in. Lately I will gravitate to beachy things to go in my beach themed office.

6. Please share something with us about your week. This week is going much smoother than last week. The pup is no longer as stinky. There is a tiniest odor every once and a while, nothing like it was, and so thankful that its not going to be a long lingering scent like the groomer said.

We have the hubs eye appt on Friday, and Saturday we are going to the Drag Races with our youngest (or should I say he is going with us....LOL)

WORLD RANGER DAY
On July 31st, World Ranger Day honors the dedication, and crucial work rangers do every day around the globe. The day offers an opportunity to show support to rangers for the services they provide. Every day, their unwavering commitment protects our national parks, wildlife, and forested heritage.

“A park ranger is a protector. You protect the land from the people, the people from the land, the people from each other and the people from themselves.” Kurt Caswell (author/writer)

Park rangers hold a variety of roles. As the front line of preservation and conservation, all park rangers are integral to national park systems. In the United States, the National Park Service (NPS) employs rangers to provide both law enforcement and cultural and educational services. Around the world, a park ranger’s role may vary depending on the environment they serve.

While the day recognizes the contributions of rangers, it also highlights their sacrifices. According to professional groups, at least 1,000 park rangers have been killed in the line of duty over the past 10 years – 75% by commercial poachers and armed militia groups. Accordingly, the day commemorates rangers killed or injured in the line of duty.

HOW TO OBSERVE
Participate in the Thin Green Line Foundation promotion. The Thin Green Line Foundation supports the work of Rangers and honors their memories. Put your name and location on the sign provided by the Foundation. Have your picture taken while holding the poster. You can also take a photo with rangers or in a protected area, and post it on social media sharing the photo to the International Ranger Federation (INF) and The Thin Green Line Foundation Facebook page.

2. How many National Parks and which ones have you visited? Is there one you would really like to visit? I have been to the Redwood National Park in California, the Mammoth Cave National Par in Kentucky, and have drove in the Everglades of Florida to get to the airboat ride, what an experience that was with my youngest!! I want to go to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Canyon National Park one of these days

4. Have you ever had an up-close-and-personal experience with a wild animal that you can tell us about? I did get to pet a opossum at the zoo many, many years ago. We had some wild turkey trot down the road a few weeks back. And read #6...

5. It is certainly an honor to show value to this profession by giving them a day of remembrance. What is another profession that you like to see honored by a "day" of their own? Hmmm I can't think of anything at this moment

6. On this last day of July, please tell us something about your week so far. Oh my.... the week started off with a bang.... here is a blurb from my Monday blog post: When a good Monday morning turns bad real quick... you know it’s going to be a long day! Lici decided it was playtime with a baby skunk..... John had just left for work... so a panic call - several times because he didn’t answer the first few times - asking him to please turn around and come help me get the dog away from the skunk and clean her up so I can punch in for work on time! We now have one smelly dog... we bathed her once with a solution so she’s not as stinky but she’s going to need another bath and one dead skunk that’s now in the trashcan! Oy vey!

Then as the day went on I noticed a bruise on my finger, I have no idea how or what I did to get it... the morning was a crazy one, so who knows! I am ready for a slower, rest of the week! One more day of work (today) and then its the weekend!Does she look at all remorseful??

NATIONAL COUSINS DAY

National Cousins Day on July 24th recognizes the lifelong relationships that grow among cousins. Our first friendships often form with cousins as young as infants and endure a lifetime.

Whether cousins grow up together in close-knit families or only see each other occasionally, they share shared memories through grandparents, aunts, and uncles. At family gatherings, cousins entertain each other and get into trouble together, too. They celebrate birthdays and might even blow out the other’s candles to their cousin’s annoyance. When their siblings irritate them, cousins become an ally. Sometimes cousins seem more like siblings, especially if they’re only children.

As cousins grow up, watching their children grow reminds them of their youth. The cycle starts over.

The day celebrates every age of cousins – new baby cousins and cousins whose babies are all grown up!

Gather up your cousins and take a photo. Send a text to your cousins who are too far away. If you need to hear their voices, give them a call. Reminisce over the good times. NATIONAL AUNT AND UNCLE’S DAY

Aunt and Uncle’s Day is observed annually on July 26th. Through holidays, special family events and sometimes sleepovers, aunts, and uncles often hold a special place in our hearts. They fill our lives with fun, laughter, love and incredible memories. National Aunt and Uncle’s Day provides an opportunity to spend time with those relatives we trusted and leaned on growing up. It would be an excellent time to get out the old photo albums. Look through the pictures, and relive the memories of earlier days around the Christmas tree or at the 4th of July picnic or maybe at the beach vacation that included those special aunts and uncles in your life. Get together with your relatives and create new memories. Remind them of all the reasons you enjoy having them in your life. Celebrate the lessons they’ve taught you and share them with the next generation.

1. What can you tell us about your cousins, please, or someone who is close like a cousin? I love my cousins! Which one do I want to talk about... hmmm... Tammie and Darla (sisters)... Tam and Dar.... growing up I was closer to Dar, doing lots of things with, and in our grown up years got closer to Tam, but still close to Dar. I love getting together with them... now just need some of their sewing genes to rub off on me! Here is one of us from a few years back... and the other pic I have of us, also includes our other cousin Wanda, who lives in Alaska, this was taken the last time she was in town and we all got together, and I just found out she will be in town next month!! Yay.

2. Do you still see your cousins and will you contact them on National Cousins Day? I do still see them.. well all but Wanda as she is too far away!

3. Terri had a favorite aunt and uncle she will tell us about. How about you? I have 2 favorite uncles... sadly both are in heaven now. Uncle Roger, and Uncle Lenny.... miss them both!

4. Did/does your family have reunions and can you tell us about them? We used to many, many years ago... now adays we just don't get together, and more or less not all get along...so its better we don't.

5. If you have children, are they enjoying relationships with their cousins, aunts, uncles? My youngest does hang out with his cousins, my oldest not so much.

6. Tell us something random about your week so far. Its a crazy week at work, as I am getting back in the swing of things after being on vacation. And the heat wave has broken, its been a pleasant week, and so much better sleeping weather!!

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Each year on July 4th, the United States celebrates Independence Day. This federal holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

For nearly 250 years, the country has been celebrating a day in history that inspires us still today. On July 4th, speeches and ceremonies are held across the nation. Across the country, people crowd cities for parades and festivals. Streets are decked out in red, white and blue bunting and flags.

While families and friends gather for some of the most mouthwatering food – large picnics and barbecues, local fairs provide a taste of culture and mom’s home cooking, too. With so many converging on their hometowns, family and school reunions take place.

Fire Works

Before the day is over, many communities hold spectacular fireworks displays re-enact moments of victory. Patriotic music accompanies the performance while spectators view the show from blankets strewn along capital lawns or from boats floating in bays. Whether out National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner” or “God Bless America,” many will sing along. In some locations, music will be played by a live orchestra or band, while in other areas it’s pre-recorded. Some of the most popular on the playlist are “America the Beautiful,” “My Country, Tis of Thee,” “This Land Is Your Land,” “Stars and Stripes Forever,” “God Bless the U.S.A.,” “Yankee Doodle” and “Dixie.”

In some parts of the country, people will shoot their own fireworks. Children delight in the bright colors and sparklers. They roast marshmallows and make s’mores.

HOW TO OBSERVE INDEPENDENCE DAY

• At noon, a “Salute to the Union” is fired, each July 4th, by any capable military base. This is a salute of one gun for each state in the United States.
• In 2009, New York City hosted the largest fireworks display in the country.
• Held since 1785, the Bristol Fourth of July Parade in Bristol, Rhode Island is the oldest continuous Independence Day celebration in the United States.

1. Please share a favorite July 4th memory with us. Taking the boys to see the fireworks when they were little every year has always been my favorite memory of the 4th. To see their excitement with each firework was just so fun!

2. How do you plan to spend tomorrow? If you are working, will you celebrate later? I don't think we are doing anything... the weather is not going to be the greatest, and with the hubs having to work on Friday it won't be a late night for us.

3. Is there a favorite food always reserved for your 4th of July celebration? not really

4. In Florida, you can buy all kinds of fireworks, including some that fly high and burst into pretty cascades. Are fireworks legal in your state/community and does anyone you know put on a display for your neighborhood? while they are legal now in my state, our city has a rule that you can only set them off the day before, the day of and the day after ANY holiday... this drives me batty. I think they should only be allowed to be set off for the 4th (day before and after is ok)... NOT every holiday!

5. Do you have a favorite movie that you always watch sometime during the 4th of July? Not really. Usually Independence Day with Will Smith is usually on one of the channels, and the hubs will watch it

6. Share something from your week, please. Update on my Lici girl. She is back to normal. It was a day and a half of her limping, and the she was back to her rambunctious self. I still have no clue what she did to injure herself.

We started the week off with it being the 5th Sunday of the month, at our church we have a night service that we call Singspiration, anyone can submit a song they want the worship team to play and we all sing along. They guys on the team, will at times break out into a jam session, which is always my favorite, as I love to hear the hubs just jam out on the guitar. Its and hour and a half of awesome praise and worship. A great start of the week!

1. Who knew there was a day to celebrate parchment paper?! Do you ever use parchment when you bake or cook? Tell us about your favorite way to use it, please. I use it on occasion. More often when I am baking cookies... I will get the next couple of batches ready to go on parchment paper

2. When Terri thinks of parchment paper, she usually thinks about special writing or artist papers. She loves using specialty papers for creating cards or other art projects. Tell us about a creative way you have used parchment paper other than to bake with! I haven't....

3. Terri used to be in the cake business and has piped many borders and roses and leaves and letters, etc., etc. You can make a pastry bag from parchment paper! Have you ever tried decorating a cake with a pastry bag and specialty tips? Do you have a picture to share? Don't be shy, now! I have used a pastry bag with tips when I made my son's 2nd bday cake... it was a dalamation one... and i swore never again... I will leave the fancier cakes to my SIL. All was done with a small star tip....my arms hurt for days after! I wish the pic so you could see the star... but alas this is a 22 yr old pic!

4. Tell us about something you baked or cooked in the past week or so that turned out great, parchment or no parchment. Will you share the recipe? well.... I just made the Lunch Lady Brownies, you can view the recipe here

5. The last Wednesday in June!! How can that be? Has your June flown by or have you been able to enjoy each day and make it slow down for you? It has flown on by!

I called the vet, they were booked and unable to squeeze her in today, told me to keep her calm and no rough housing for the night, and call first thing at 8 to get a same day appt for tomorrow (this is Tuesday night, so Wed morning). So lots of carrying her as she is so pitiful looking hobbling around. So if you could say some prayers for my sweet little Lici, i would appreciate it!

Celebrated each year on June 19, it is National Garfield the Cat Day. A fictional character, Garfield is a title protagonist from the comic strip Garfield which was created by Jim Davis. Today is set aside to celebrate him and the entertainment that he brings us.

June 19, 1978, was the first publication of Garfield which chronicles the life of the lead character, the cat Garfield (named after Jim Davis ’s grandfather); Garfield’s owner, Jon Arbuckle: and Jon’s dog, Odie.

• 2013 – Garfield is syndicated in roughly 2,580 newspapers and journals and holds the Guinness World Record for being the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip.

Set in Muncie, Indiana, common themes in the comic strip include Garfield’s laziness, obsessive eating, love for lasagna and coffee and hatred of Mondays and diets. The focus is mostly upon the interaction between Garfield, Jon, and Odie.

• Garfield was one of the cartoon characters to appear in Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue.

National Garfield The Cat Day was first celebrated in 1998 on the 20th anniversary of the comic strip and Garfield’s birthday. Boca Raton City Council Member, Wanda Thayer, proclaimed June 19 as Garfield the Cat Day during surprise birthday party at the International Museum of Cartoon Art in Boca Raton.

1. If you have ever followed the Garfield comic strip, you know Garfield loves lasagne. What is your favorite Italian food? Do you over-indulge when it comes to pasta?

Lasagna is my favorite, and I don't over indulge

2. Tell us about your very first pet. If you have never had a pet, can you tell us about an animal that touched your life in some way? That would be our cats Sally and Susie we had when I was growning up.... can't remember much about them. The first pets I had one I was on my own, would be our cats Sami and Prissy - Sami was my hubs cat through and through, she was one large cat. Pris was my calico kitty, and such a lover...miss these two.

3. Garfield sleeps his day away, only waking to eat or sweet talk his girlfriend Arleen. How many hours sleep do you normally get each night? How much sleep do you really need?

I try and be in bed by 10, as I get up at 6 to get the hubs up and out the door for work... I range from between 5-6 hrs, as I am a very light sleeper, every little sound/movement seems to wake me up, and its hard to get back to sleep.... I really need to get 8ish, but i just can't seem to stay asleep long enough

4. Garfield lets the mice in the house have their way. When was the last time you had to chase out a little varment?

As in a mouse? Never...and I hope to never...that would freak me the heck out!

5. Garfield also loves his teddy bear Pooky. Did you have a favorite stuffed animal when you were young (or now!)? If you didn't or don't, what about someone you know?

I had a lamb that was my favorite growing up.... I had it for a very long time after moving out but somewhere along the line it got lost.

6. Please tell us something about your week, so far! The week started out with Father's Day, the boys came over for dinner and the oldest grilled for us. I have one pic of them, they look oh so thrilled, can't ya tell?

Tuesday I had to go into work for a 2 hr training, and found this at my spot from one of my coworkers... she is the one that said I had to name my truck... which is something I have never done (name my vehicles)...so jokingly I said Felix, and now it has stuck...LOL

4. Terri admits that this turned out to be not what she thought it would be. Our country has come a long way in recognizing that people are people and our differences are what makes life beautiful, but we still have a long way to go, unfortunately. Your thoughts? I say marry who you want

5. Had to lighten it up a bit. Terri is a total klutz in the kitchen. Tell us about something klutzy that happened in your kitchen... by you or another! Can you laugh about it now? Hmmm.... probably the time I went to add in a little salt to a dish I was making, and not realizing that someone hadn't put the top on tight and into the dish it went... top and salt.... ugh...take out it was for dinner that night!

6. Share something about your week so far, if you would. The hubs and I picked up some weights, and are back at the church's gym. Its nice to have other equipment to use than the few random items we have at home. Other than that, not much else going on.

National Paperclip Day
1. Wow! Had you ever heard of the Holocaust project involving paperclips? It is a great teaching project, for sure! I have not heard of that... but yes a great teaching project!

2. Have you ever created a paperclip chain? How long did it get? I am sure I have when I was a kid

3. I use paperclips as hooks at Christmas time to put ornaments on the tree. Works like a charm!! What is something you used a paperclip for, other than holding papers together? as a twist tie sort of to hold a shirt closed

4. I am amazed at the shapes and colors of paperclips available. I found my favorite... share your favorite with us here! Just a few of my favorites I have received from friends.

5. Say goodbye to May on this last Wednesday of May. Be poetic if you will, or simply bid it adieu. oh man, I don't have anything poetic to say... other than A fond farewell to you May, its time for the summer sun/fun of June!

The Friday before Memorial Day is declared National Road Trip Day and serves as the official kickoff of the summer road trip season. With two-thirds of leisure travelers (64 percent)* planning to take vacations this summer, it’s clear that the open road calls when long weekends and Fridays roll around. We pack up, fuel up, stock up and then crank up the tunes. In fact, 63 percent** of road trippers say that having good music, audiobooks and/or podcasts to listen to are the most important parts of a successful road trip. Additionally, three in five road trippers (59 percent) say that having good snacks and drinks for the road, finding great places to eat on the way and finding clean bathrooms to use while traveling are their most important parts of a successful road trip.

Whether we’re seeking adventure, visiting family and friends or making a business connection, road trips are often a rite of passage. Sometimes we endure them, often hearing, “Are we there yet?” And other times we never want them to end; sometimes getting lost can be even more fun than the original plan.

Getting There Road trips that begin and end with happy passengers are always the best. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Plan ahead. Even a spur of the moment trip requires a little planning.

• Two in five (42 percent) road trippers find travel apps very helpful when planning their trip, and mapping out your stops ahead of time can be a great way to save both time and money.
• One way to do so is with the Pilot Flying J app’s enhanced trip planner feature. The trip planner helps users create their route and find Pilot and Flying J locations along the way, showcasing specific amenities, fuel prices and more.

Vehicle maintenance is vital to any successful road trip. Beyond the routine maintenance like oil changes and sound tires, other simple checks will keep you on the road.

• check your wipers and wiper fluid
• make sure your spare tire and jack are in place
• all lights and signals are working
• condition of your brake pads
• registration is current or not about to expire

Plot your course. Consider construction, fuel and snack stops, shopping and the interests of the other travelers.

• Road trippers prioritize convenience and efficiency, primarily (58 percent) wanting to stop at all-in-one rest stops (offers gas, food, drinks, coffee, bathrooms, and more.).
• Specifically, the top “road trip essential” snacks are chips and salty foods (52 percent), freshly made, grab-and-go foods (50 percent) and fast food options (49 percent).

How do you travel? There are two kinds of people who take road trips. If you’re going together, you might want to discuss a compromise before hitting the road! The tourist takes their time getting there and doesn’t mind taking backroads to see long-forgotten ghost towns. On the other hand, the pilot enjoys seeing the country from the car, sets a course and frowns upon unscheduled stops or side trips.

No matter the destination, road trips include an element of expectation, and they rarely disappoint. The best road trips bring us closer to people over a stick of beef jerky and car karaoke. They connect us to places through memories, a postcard, and the kindness of strangers.

I decided to skip ahead to Friday for today's Medley. It IS a holiday weekend for us in the USA and lots of folks do take road trips on long weekends. Let's see where we can go with this one!!

1. Have you ever done a spur-of-the-moment road trip? yep Where did it take you? the hubs and I jumped in the truck and hit the road for a leisurely drive and ended up in the middle of the state (MI), don't even remember the town, and found some antique shops.

2. If time and money wasn't an issue, what roads would you choose to travel and how long would you be gone? I would love to start at the beginning of Route 66 and just go to the end of it, stopping along they way in all the towns.

3. When you go on a long road trip, what snacks and beverages do you take? either water, or some sort of caffeinated beverage, chips, pretzels, licorice Do you pack a picnic? sometimes Does the back seat turn into a nest? Oh for sure!!

4. Please tell us about something interesting or strange you have seen on the side of the road. I can't think of anything

5. Who does the driving when you head out in the car? usually the hubs Do you stop in the rest areas along our Interstate highways when you have to use the facilities, or do you choose a fast-food restaurant or gas station instead? Not TMI... inquiring minds want to know! all of the above

National Nylon Stocking Day is observed across the country each year on May 15.

Many may not remember ever hearing the term “nylon stockings.” Varying in color, design, and transparency, a nylon stocking (also known as hose) is a close-fitting, variously elastic garment worn the same as socks or tights.

Stockings worn before the 1890s were made of woven cloth such as cotton, linen, wool or silk. Before the 1920s, women’s stockings were worn for warmth. As hemlines of women’s dresses rose in the 1920s, women began to wear stockings over their exposed legs. These 1920s stockings were sheer, made first of silk or rayon, followed by nylon after 1940.

Chemical company DuPont’s introduction of nylon in 1939 began a high demand for stockings in the United States. As nylon stockings were inexpensive, durable and shear, up to 4 million pairs would be purchased each day.

On February 11, 1942, as America entered World War II, DuPont ceased production of nylon stockings and switching their focus to the manufacture of parachutes, airplane cords and rope. This created a mass shortage followed by a black market for stockings. At the end of World War II, DuPont resumed production of the stockings but could not meet the demand leading to nylon riots in American stores. In time, DuPont was able to increase its output.

In the 1940s and 1950s, the first pantyhose made its appearance. Film and theater productions had stockings sewn to the briefs of actresses and dancers, as seen in popular films such as Daddy Long Legs. Unlike stockings, pantyhose did not require a garter belt to hold the stockings up.

Pantyhose were introduced in 1959, providing a convenient alternative to stockings which led to a decline in their sales. In 1970, for the first time, United States sales of pantyhose exceeded stocking sales and has remained the same ever since. In 1987, there was a slight decline in sales in pantyhose due to the newly invented hold-ups. However, they remain the most purchased kind of hosiery.

I vaguely do During the war, when stockings were scarce, women would draw a line on their legs to simulate wearing stockings! How far would you go to superficially fake something today? Well... I do color my hair... not ready to go gray

3. Women actually rioted after WWII because Dupont couldn't keep up with the demand for nylon stockings! Is there anything today you would riot for if the supply dried up (other than basic food and water needs)? I don't think so

4. Pantyhose were first called Panty Legs. I'm sure we all have worn pantyhose at one time or another (again, men don't have to answer). Do you still have a pair or three in a drawer? I have one pair of nylons Do you wear them? on occasion until the legs get a little color on them

5. This is also National Chocolate Chip Day. Perhaps chocolate is something to riot for if we ran out? Joe's favorite cookie is chocolate chip. What is yours? oatmeal raisin
